Abstract

Teaching pragmatics in English Language Teaching (ELT) is crucial for fostering effective communication among learners. This paper explores the concept of conversational implicature as a fundamental component of pragmatic competence. Conversational implicature refers to the meanings that are implied rather than explicitly stated in conversations, which can significantly influence understanding and interaction. By integrating pragmatic awareness into ELT curricula, educators can equip students with the skills necessary to navigate real-life communication scenarios successfully. This study highlights practical strategies for teaching conversational implicature, including role-playing, context-based discussions, and analyzing authentic dialogues. Ultimately, fostering an understanding of conversational implicature not only enhances language proficiency but also promotes cultural awareness and social sensitivity among learners, enabling them to engage more effectively in diverse communicative contexts.
